Another reason to find all siblings’ birth records

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

As if there weren’t enough reasons to find all siblings’ birth records, here is another one:

Older siblings’ birth records entered right after newborn sibling’s one, per parents request. Original record was not recorded for various reasons, most common I’ve seen so far is “out of town”.

Information in recruitment lists

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Recruitment lists (call up lists, actual drafts, etc) contain a lot of wonderful data. Some have detailed family information, others have description of appearance (height, hair and eye color, …), place of residence, etc.

One piece of information is easy to overlook though. A comment field sometime contains information in whose stead a person is serving! Can be a wonderful surprise if needed name is not found on the list.

Christening, change of faith (part 2)

In Jewish records, if one converts to another faith (to Russian Orthodoxy, for example), a note next to birth record is usually added. It will contain information such as: where, when and by whom the person was christened and his/her new name (if changed). Based on that information it should be easy to find original christening record.

Birth records with marriage or death record reference

Rarely birth record would contain back reference to a marriage or a death record. Few of the reasons are:

– Father died before the birth of a child, so his death reference is given as a proof of legitimacy (which is usually the case).

– Child is born less than 9 months after marriage took place, so marriage reference is given. In one example marriage took place only a month earlier. It is impossible to say anything definite about the paternity in such cases.

Christening, change of faith

When someone changed his or her faith to Russian Orthodoxy, it was recorded in birth records (which are actually “christening records“). Often people changed their name as well.

An example from church in Konotop town:

Boy Shmerka Avramov Kerlin christened as Ioann, Ivanovich Buryachenko in his godfather’s name. Change in middle and last name (and the age of the boy) suggests that he was also adopted by Ivan Kirillov Buryachenko.
